Good investment

I've been teaching myself Italian for a number of years and always seemed to hit a brick wall when it came to practising my verb conjugations. This book has definitely been a great help in overcoming this hurdle. It includes 12 chapters each covering a specific concept briefly followed by a few pages of various exercises. Contrary to a one star rating the book does have a chapter specifically dedicated to the crucial `To have' and `To be' verbs and placed in such a way that by the time you get to it, you're already feeling confident enough to tackle them.

This book does not aim to bog you down with complex verb rules and regulations, it's there to help you practice conjugating verbs and it scores top marks for doing just that.

As a side note, I find the exercises work best if you say them out loud, instead of writing them down and in that way you can use the book over and over again.

Very patchy, I'm sure there is better around

I'm a beginner starting to learn the language and wanted a simple book to help me with the essential verbs to start using the language as soon as possible. This book didn't help. It starts by listing the main verb types and starts with the present tense. A good start. However is misses out two of the most essential verbs completely - To Be and To Have, both of which are irregular and therefore need detailed explanations.
Next it lists a variety of commonly used verbs intermingled with less useful verbs. It then proceeds to give exercises and more often than not concentrates on examples with the less used verbs and neglects the more commonly used ones, so not a lot of use as, at this early stage, I only want to build a core knowledge of the essential verbs.
The exercises that it does give also have large amounts of white space to allow you to write your answer. Why not save space by telling you to get a piece of paper to write your answers on, so you can then re-use the exercises and an added bonus is the book would be thinner (but then you would think you were getting less value for money!).
In adddition the large format size makes it difficult to carry round and use on your travels.
Overall it looks like a very generic book with little thought as to how it will be used, very frustrating and a very poor offering.
Give me a small well designed product any day.
Look a little further before buying.

A must if you are serious about learning Italian. Great book. Delivered promptly.

Useful practice, but full of mistakes and inaccuracies

I agree with David Townend. This book contains many inaccurate and misleading translations and answers. I constantly have to check the answers provided and the meanings of the verbs in my Collins verb tables. There was even an 'are' verb included in the 'ire' (if I recall correctly) section. In addition you are asked to translate verbs that have not been mentioned previously in the book. I also find that there are insufficient examples of the use of some of the tenses. Having said that, there are plenty of verb drills to help you practice your conjugations - even if the author uses a fairly limited choice of verbs. Fairly useful, but not reliable

Just what I needed

This is a verb book for beginners and intermediate learners. It has a clear layout and is easy to use. It is just what I as a beginner needed to get a good clear toe hold on Italian verbs.
