The Big Red Book of Spanish Vocabulary: 30,000 Words through Cognates, Roots, and Suffixes (Big Book of Verbs Series)

I was very hopeful when I ordered this book. I was looking for a vocabulary builder with everyday words ordered according to situations, fields etc. But I found the first part of the book (Spanish cognates)very disappointing, because the English words are translated with the Spanish word that has the same root as the English word, and not the word most commonly used in Spanish.I guess that many of translations therfore may sound strange and unspanish for a spanish speaker. Also the vocabulary is very literary and scientific, and of little use for a learner of Spanish looking for an everyday vocabulary. The Spanish vocabulary is mainly Latin-American (with many Americanisms), not Peninsular Spanish. I found the second and third parts(Spanish roots and suffixes) more useful. The fourth part(word frequency table, built on only one Mexican newspaper)could have been more useful if it had been built on a wider source selection. Because of the first part I give only 1 star. I would not recommend this book for students of Spanish.
