Good practice!

I own Practice Makes Perfect along with Smart French and Collins, and I found that the combination was a good one: Easy Learning French (Collins Easy Learning Audio Course) makes you master useful basic sentences, while SmartFrench - Introduction to French, Vol.1 adds great tips on pronunciation to their brilliant explanations of the structure of the french language, and Practice Makes Perfect: Complete French Grammar (Practice Makes Perfect Series) teaches you with excellent exercises . All three are awesome together.

finally.............I understand!

I am in an intensive French course where the teacher will only speak in French. However, there are some things that you just can't "get" unless it is explianed in English. I really have found this book to be easy to understand and extremly helpful - well worth it!

Useful Study Aid

Despite the pages of the book being rain water damaged as a result of poor packaging, I am happy with the item. It arrived damp, but fairly speedily and has been well used as an 'A' level study aid for my daughter. She says it is clear and straightforward to use.

practice makes perfect

Clear, attractively laid out on the page - actually invites one to do the exercises. Thorough treatment if you are learning from scratch but also ideal to check if you really do know what you assume you know. The vocabulary is useful and the sentence structures lead on to quite complex sentences. The arrangement is slightly odd as complicated verb usages are placed before use of definite article.
Excellent value for money.

Great as a refresher too

I did French up to BA level (reading French literature in the original) but that was some years ago and I haven't used my French since. Wanting to pick it back up again I scoured the web for a good refresher and finally settled for this both because of the good reviews and because at this price it wouldn't be a huge loss if it were useless - but I'm delighted to say it's not.

Clear, concise, with vocabulary lists and exercises this really is a fabulous book. So far the exercises are too basic for me, but looking ahead I can see they're going to prove really useful soon.

This isn't a stand-alone book (as the title says): you do need either a proper French course-book or to be having lessons at the same time. But if you're looking for a supplementary grammar text or, like me, you've learnt French before but have forgotten it (and I'm amazed at how much is still embedded in my head) then this is a fabulous buy and I can't really imagine anything better.
