Not very unfunny jokes - avoid

I bought this and a few other books as the reviews varied widely. This was by far the worst of the books. The jokes are mostly not funny, kind of old school style

Speechwriting isn't meant to be read
~ Written on Jan 26, 2006. out of users found this review helpful.

Some people thing the lines in this book are crude and unfunny. I took the advice of one of the reviewers below and looked up on hitched.co.uk for ideas for my speeches. The problem is that the highly rated speeches read well, but they don't make the audience laugh. Have you ever seen a sit-com script? The lines are very short.

I now write speeches for other people. I use Mitch Murray's books all the time for reference. If you don't like the line as it stands, adapt it to your own needs.

Helpful advice, dodgy jokes
~ Written on Dec 6, 2004. 1 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

Having just delivered a very well received best man's speech using the general format suggested by this book and using many of its useful hints, I can recommend the first part of the book to anyone who is queasy at the thought of having to stand up at a wedding reception in front of a large number of assorted friends, relatives and relative strangers and make them laugh.

However, whilst Mitch Murray's speech format worked very well for me, the second part of the book featuring a selection of jokes organised by speech-giver and theme is not so helpful. Perhaps they are intended to give a sense of the level at which to pitch your speech - but actually using any of the jokes verbatim will make you sound like you're auditioning for the circa-1970s show "The Comedians".

The first part of this book was genuinely helpful. The second part simply made me cringe - and put me off the book for a long time. Best used in conjunction with other, more modern books.

Succes

Despite buying a selection of books, this was the only one I actually needed. My entire speach was taken from the one liners in this book. My speach was a thorough success and extremely appropriate.I got many laughs and the day was a truely memorable occasion.

Fantastic, Funny and Very Helpful!

... I found this book to be excellent. Firstly, I read the whole book to find out what jokes I liked. Some of them are [rubbish] but that is to be expected. I highlighted the jokes that were relevant to the groom and I inserted them into my speech. With the mixture of my material and the jokes from the book, everyone really liked the speech. In fact, people said it was one of the best they had heard. It was a definate help to me and gave me a wide variety of jokes. Buy this and have fun making your speech!
