EDITORIAL REVIEW

Improve Your English is an essential companion to the other three books in the Teach Your Child to Write Good English series. It is aimed at 8-14 years olds but can also be used with candidates taking GCSE foundation examinations.

The book focuses on specific concepts of punctuation, grammar and spelling that children find hard to grasp. It explains how sentences are built up and can be made more interesting by the correct use of clauses and connectives or by eliminating dull words like nice or got and replacing them with more interesting vocabulary. As children progress it becomes more important to be accurate with punctuation and spelling; valuable marks in examinations can be lost by poor spelling. The book focuses on the correct use of homophones, words that sound the same but are spelt differently, like their, there and theyre (which are a problem for many young writers). The parts of speech are explained in a simple, understandable way, encouraging the child to use colourful verbs, adjectives and adverbs to make their writing more descriptive. The page, which describes "the ghost that haunts spookily", encompasses all the different parts of speech, making complex ideas easy for children of all abilities to understand at a glance.

Following the introduction, the book, presents a series of eight graded exercises so the child can correct sentences using capital letters and punctuation, wrongly spelt words, points of grammar and match vocabulary to suitable meanings. Added to this there are suggested answers at the back of the book.

The books are essential for any child wishing to brush up on their punctuation and grammar skills, especially those working through the three companion books. However, they have been particularly helpful for children learning English as a second language and those with specific learning difficulties.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

USER REVIEWS

An Essential Text Book
~ Written on Jul 11, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

I found this book extremely useful. It teaches basic, as well as more advanced, grammatical skills in a comprehensive and easily understood format. Areas which many children find difficult to grasp are clearly explained and can be practised in the numerous exercises provided. I would recommend this book to any parent whose child's written work is let down by grammatical errors; from KS2 right up to GCSE. In my opinion this is an essential book.

Disappointing-Full of grammatical errors
~ Written on Jun 24, 2009. 1 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

I was looking forward to receiving this book after reading the other reviews, just imagine my disappointment when I found error after error throughout the book. Some of it may have been down to poor editing -missing punctuation and spelling but other parts are clearly down to the writer (and I am not referring to the exercises that ask the child to correct the mistakes).
I bought this book for a young girl who is struggling at key stage 3 but the content and presentation is far too juvenile for her. In my opinion it would just about cover key stage 2, maybe ages 8-11, once it had been re-edited. I sent mine straight back to Amazon.

Really useful

What a wonderful book! Improve Your English includes everything a child and even an adult needs to know about English grammar. The first half of the 140+ pages teach vital skills, such as, using capital letters, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, direct and indirect speech, colons and semi colons, commas and apostrophes, making sentences more interesting by using sub clauses, connectives, complex and compound sentences, explaining homophones, metaphors and similes and much more.
I have never before come across such a comprehensive book on English grammar. Improve Your English presents grammatical concepts in a way that is very easy to understand. The second half of the book has exercises to test what has been learnt. The answers are even at the back.
I fully recommend this book to any parent whose child's written work is let down by spelling, punctuation and grammatical mistakes. With a book like this on the market there is no excuse for a child to lose marks in exams from use of bad English.
