SUPERB PROGRAM IDEAL FOR ANYONE LEARNING ENGLISH OR SPANISH!!!!
~ Written on Oct 15, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary CD-ROM is a perfect addition for anyone serious about learning a ton of vocabulary in either English or Spanish. This edition of the Oxford Picture Dictionary contains many words used throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. For instance, you will learn autobús and guagua for bus. Also, basurero and zafacón for trashcan. So, for those who are interested in learning the variations within the Spanish speaking world for a number of common words, this is a great starting place. I found that the 2009 edition does not distinguish between the dialectal differences throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, however use words that may be more common or considered more "standard" within the Spanish language.

Regarding the CD-ROM, each section is divided similar to the paperback 1998 edition. The words are spoken in native English and Spanish respectively. It's easy to use and because the entire book is on the CD-ROM, you do not necessarily need the paperback version. You simply click on a word to hear how it is said. You have an option to hear and read all vocabulary in either English/Spanish, Spanish only or English only. Which makes it more unique and for the price the most affordable way to learn thousands of words effortlessly. Seeing a picture, hearing the word spoken and using a visual approach to learning, makes the process easy and the vocabulary more memorable.

That said, all of CD activities and tests are in English as the Oxford Picture Dictionaries are created for those who wish to learn English, not a foreign language. Likewise, this program is their older version and works only on XP or older for Windows. I'm not certain how it will function on newer Macs. The newer CD-ROM offered by Oxford does not have a bilingual version. So, if you are like me...using their bilingual Spanish/English CD-ROM and texts, the newest CD-ROM will not benefit.

I find the Oxford bilingual series to be the best on the market and the least expensive. They are easy to use and contain some of the most essential vocabulary words one would need to know no matter what language they are learning. I highly recommend the CD-ROM as it is a great resource for any serious student or language-learning enthusiast such as myself.

Thank you!

This was a much smaller resource than I thought, and the text font is miniscule. I returned the product for the Oxford Picture Dictionary by Adelson-Goldstein & Shapiro, which is quite good.

This dictionary comes in a variety of languages and is of invaluable assistance to a foreign student learning English. The pictures of everyday items are labeled in English and in the student's own languagae.

I have used these dictionaries for years in teaching English as a second language. I get them from Amazon, work with them through the final chapter, and find my student far more at home with the complexities of English. If I have a class, I have each student get his or her own dictionary; I do not use one book for a group. Priceless!!!

Non-English speaking parents use this dictionary to help their children with homework. It is amazing how thorough and user-friendly this publication is to all who use it. A wonderful vocabulary builder too!
