Not My Cup of Tea
~ Written on Nov 20, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

I love mysteries and thrillers of all kinds, and dramatic fiction that is unique and challenging. This book didn't fit into any of these catagories for me. I can't deny its popularity, but I can say it wasn't my cup of tea.
I was glad when I finished it.

To be quite honest I had never heard of this book until I saw the trailer linked from Twitter in reference to the moving coming out next month. After watching the trailer I said to myself "wow that had to have been a book first", a little tiny search on Yahoo brought up a plethora of results and I am happy to say that Sebold's book is the second I purchased on my Sony Pocket Reader. I tore through this book in a day, staying up into the night to finish it. It brought me out of my funk of not reading after having the baby and put me back on track. I am so happy to have read the book before watching the movie.

The story follows fourteen year old Susie Salmon from her after life as she deals with her rape and brutal murder. She resents being killed and wishes her murder to be brought to justice. She also wishes to relive her first kiss and have many more, she wishes of course to have grown up. We watch her family crumble under the pressure of having a child murdered, her school friends grow up without her. How everything evolves except for Susie who is stuck just watching waiting for her murder to be captured.

This is a lovely story that will keep you on the edge of your seat, and will also make sure you lose some sleep due to the fact you cannot put the book down. Don't watch the film without buying a copy first!

A diffrent view
~ Written on Nov 12, 2009. out of 1 users found this review helpful.

It was an attention grabber on the first page when the reader is advised that the main character is telling the story from her Heaven. That situation makes the story interesting as she learns about relationships that she wasn't able to understand while she was alive. It was an interesting read because of that perspective, but was maybe overwritten a bit. As each relationship is defined and settled it unnecessarily bleeds into the next character's story causing a little confusion.

good but not great

I liked this a lot, especially at the beginning. There were some very powerful emotions and fascinating perspectives throughout the book - in places. But on the whole it tended to wander along. The popularity of this book is not justified by the hype.

It's not exactly a murder mystery or suspense novel (and I'm sure that Sebold wrote with that in mind), but I found myself wanting more *action*. The little interaction between Suzie (as a ghost) and her family seems mostly incidental to the story itself. The one time she 'falls to earth' is nice, but could be edited out of the story without hurting it at all. Even the moment of 'revenge' near the end was almost a footnote it was such a brief aside.

I predict this may be one of those few times I prefer the movie to the book.

this book changed my life

this novel gave me a reason to live in my darkest days. Each line is melancholy and beautiful. This book will give you hope even through the most grave situations. I recommend it to literally everyone.
