Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (New Riverside Editions)

This is an unbelievably amazing book, an absolute must-read for children and adults alike. Through the years, this book has been misunderstood, misinterpreted, even maligned - hence banned from schools - an absolute travesty! In my humble opinion, there probably has not been a book written in history which encomposses as much of the complicated human condition as this one. I started reading this book at elementary school age and never stopped. One continues to absorb so many different things from it - as a child and as an adult - as if it is a different book every time you read it, and all these things are valuable in their own way. It is hard to relay the value of this book unless you read it, and it should be on every school reading list!

My teenage daughter was tasked by her english class teacher to write a book report on a book of her choosing,as long as the book was one of the classics. She asked for my help in finding a book, I suggested The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I checked E-Bay and found that the book was available in paperback for a very low price,and in less than two weeks, the book arrived.

My daughter read the entire book,which was a surprise to me because I don't remember her reading anything that was not a teen magazine,and wrote her book report. I'am glad to say that she thanked me and wanted me to know how much she enjoyed the book even though her teacher felt that she had help writing the report.I wonder where she got that idea.

Michael Patrick Hearn's annotation of Twain's Huckleberry Finn is a wonderful composite of scholarship written about Huckleberry Finn over many years, and in my opinion, should be on everyone's bookshelf who is a serious reader of Twain. I belong to a weekly book club of mature readers who enjoy a deeper interpretation of style, content, multiple levels of meaning, and philosophy of all "classics" of literature. In the case of Huckleberry Finn, we all had read the book earlier in our lives, and we have enjoyed it all the more reading it now.

Hearn's book will likely be a classic in itself one day.

My only criticism is the numbered annotations are set side by side in the text which makes it more difficult for me to read. I would prefer that they all be listed at the end of each chapter.
