I teach 5th grade and I like this to mix up spelling assignments. This book has some creative ideas on different activities that can be used with students weekly spelling words. Also works great during short weeks or end of the year. Spelling can get very boring so, some new ideas never hurt!
As an unschooler I found this book really annoying! It is just every day writing exercises dressed up as spelling. You do a fun project like a comic strip and put the emphasis on spelling. Or, let's make bumper stickers and see if you spelled the words right...Sorry folks, but this one spells boring.
I teach fifth grade, and my students get so tired of the same old spelling activities. Then I discovered this book. The activities are fun and creative. There is something for everyone. One of my students favorite activities was the map. In this activity the student's created a map of a state and use their spelling words to name the places. Then I was able to use the social studies skills by having them add to their maps geo features, and math when they measured the distance between cities and created a map key. Another favorite activity was the comic strip. I had a boy in my class who hated to write, but loved to draw. He created some of the funniest comic strips and went far beyond what I asked him to do. Then it worked so well with my students who are on different spelling lists. Whether they were on a higher or lower list of words everyone could do the same activity. I sure hope these authors come up with more activities, because I'll be interested in seeing them!
The lessons in this book meet all my student's learning style needs. This book has many great ideas for independent and group work. The book has so many different ideas that I feel like it is a pleasure to teach spelling. Plus, the kids love it!
I really enjoyed using this book in my classroom. My students were excited to attempt the different hands on activities. I would recommend this book for anyone who is looking to provide a whole language experience for their students. SIMILAR ITEMS:
