Excellent resource

Very helpful for people interested in a proofreading or copyediting career. The chapter on how to get freelance work was especially helpful. I also liked the practice exercises -- I just wish the author had included more of them!

I absolutely love this book. I am new to the field of freelance proofreading and copyediting, and this book was extremely helpful. It covers every aspect of this job, including how to interact with writers and publishing houses. It also has specific lessons on proofreading symbols, punctuation, grammar, etc. I have spoken with several people in this field, and they have all given me similar information, especially with regard to helpful websites. Great book for anyone wanting to enter this profession.

Great Way to Learn the Craft

In true "For Dummies" style, this book is organized well and written in a conversational tone that makes it enjoyable to read while learning. Suzanne Gilad clearly explains the difference between copyediting and proofreading and gives practice samples (original copy and then corrected copy) for both. She also gives instructions on how to edit both hardcopy and electronic copy. This book includes a section on basic grammar and punctuation and even a section showing the difference between British and American English. Also included are chapters on finding employment and starting a freelance business. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in copyediting and proofreading, but you're not sure where to start.

Incredible

I always thought that the "For Dummies" books were well, not very informative, just textbook like info that is cold and boring. How wrong I was. This book is incredibly informative, and very well written. The writer is funny and obviously knows what she is talking about. The information is great and the resources provided within are a huge help. I am very impressed with this book, and may have to check out more of the "For Dummies" books.

Superb book !

This book far exceeded my expectations. It is invaluable to me. It has become my bible. I have been working successfully as a proofreader for over a year. Education, background, and experience prepared me well for this work, and yet this book rounded out my previous education and experience and, importantly, provided much-needed practical information career-wise, making me one happy camper.
