Now at last here's a feast for them and other verbivores. Eat up!" -Barbara Wallraff Senior Editor at The Atlantic Monthly and author of Word Court Praise for A Word a Day "AWADies will be familiar with Anu Garg's refreshing approach to words: words are fun and they have fascinating histories. The people who use them have curious stories to tell too, and this collection incorporates some of the correspondence received by the editors at the AWAD site, from advice on how to outsmart your opponent in a duel (or even a truel) to a cluster of your favorite mondegreens." -John Simpson, Chief Editor, Oxford English Dictionary "A banquet of words! Feast and be nourished!" -Richard Lederer, author of The Miracle of Language Written by the founder of the wildly popular A Word A Day Web site (www.wordsmith.org), this collection of unusual, obscure, and exotic English words will delight writers, scholars, crossword puzzlers, and word buffs of every ilk. Amazon provides quick, inexpensive, complete and thorough service. I always find what I'm looking for and it arrives quickly. If there is a problem, which happened with one product awhile ago, Amazon's AtoZ guarantee paid for it without a glich. I am one happy customer!
For those of us who love words, this book is a wonderful addition to any collection of books about language. The book is not primarily a vocabulary builder (although it can be), it is more a celebration of the interesting, the obscure and the unusual. I bought this book back in 2004 after discovering the word a day website. I may never use most of thee words in my everyday speech or writing, but I feel enriched by making their acquaintance. I must treat myself to the second book soon. Jennifer Cameron-Smith
Have always loved the AWAD web site and Garg's fresh approach to language. How nice to have a book in one's hand to peruse at leisure. Garg's introductions to each chapter personalize and make the somewhat arcane words come to life.
Anu Garg writes a fun romp through the riches of the English language. Did'ja know that English has about 100,000 words? And than the NEXT wordiest language is German--and it has only about 20,000 (and they swipe English words shamelessly.) If you want to gain more vocabulary and have fun doing it, I can't recommend this fine book enough. If you like the works of writers like Richard Lederer (Anguished English), you will really want a copy of this. Since I like words and I enjoy learning new ones, I was pleased to find that there were plenty of words here I had never seen before. Great fun for students, especially those training for SAT's. Recommended.
I love the concept of a-word-a-day and this book supplements the daily e-mails because it lets me more easily go back to the words I need to access. SIMILAR ITEMS:
