Evolution of 40s Fashion
~ Written on May 27, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

This is a great look at what the everyday lady was wearing in the 40s--clothes, shoes, hats, etc. I wish it was a bit larger, though. Perhaps because Sears' catalogs shrank substantially during the war years, there isn't much in the way of intimates and shoes from the early 40s. Also includes quite a bit of men's and children's fashions, too--anything from very small children to "in-between-ers." It's interesting to see how fashion evolved throughout the 40s, particularly after the war when Dior's "New Look" became popular. This shows how the fashions from the big cities were adapted for the more conservative tastes of middle America--very fascinating.

Good Info for costuming

I am doing a 1940's themed play and this book helped with costuming ideas so I can keep it as accurate as possible. Black and white photos.

Fashions of the Forties

This is a comprehensive view of how women looked in the Forties. This was the age of the Movie Star and a look of glamour with sleek fitted lines for that very feminine look. Excellent graphics with the actual picures taken from the Sears catalog.

Required Reference

The decade-by-decade images from all the books in this series are, IMHO, required references for those interested in fashion and costume design in the 20th century.

Great trip down memory lane!

Not only is it great to see the everyday fashions of this era, you can really enjoy reading the descriptions and especially be amazed by the prices of the items!

Keep it in pristine condition as a collector's item, or use it as part of a scrapbooking project with photos of the family from way-back-when!

Any way you use it, Everyday Fashions of the Forties as Pictured in Sears Catalogs is a lot of entertainment for a little price -- just not quite the sort of prices you'll see inside the book!

There's lots of fun here. Highly recommended!
