EDITORIAL REVIEW

Guidelines, Third edition, is an advanced reading and writing text designed specifically to strengthen students' academic writing. The cross-cultural readings in Guidelines offer a wide range of thought-provoking subject matter, varying in genre, viewpoint, length, and style. As students respond to the readings and work their way through the writing assignments, they are assisted by strategies laid out in 'Guidelines' boxes and by examples from other student writers. Writing assignments include research writing and essays that synthesize sources, critique arguments, and analyze fiction. A handbook is included as a reference guide in the back of the book. It contains sections on documenting sources, drafting and revising, and correcting grammatical errors. Guidelines, Third edition, is a major revision. The readings have been updated, the chapters are easier to navigate, and the 'Guidelines' now include references to the Internet as a means of research.

Great service, and product just as promised. Very satisfied with service. Will definitely buy from seller again.

But too bad they left out the May Sarton essay...

I've used Guidelines for my advanced ESL composition course at a community college for the past six or seven years, and it's the best book I know of for the purpose. My only regret is that May Sarton's essay "The Rewards of Living a Solitary Life" was omitted from this new edition. I've had some great student papers that came from reading the Sarton essay back-to-back with Yezierska's "College," and considering the difference between solitude and loneliness. It's only a few pages--put it back in next time!

Super! For use with any college students - not just ESL/EFL

I began using Guidelines (the first edition) in 1995 when it was essentially prescribed by an EFL colleague using it to teach another section of composition. I found it to be one of the best texts I've ever used for a comp class. The readings are genuinely engaging and students really felt motivated to reply in writing and with in-class discussion. Many years later, I'm no longer teaching composition, but keep this book on my shelf anyway since I never know when I will want to refer to one of the readings.
