So far, so good!

I purchased Sonlight's remedial reading program, which includes this book along with readers, for my seven year old who is struggling with reading. The program is so easy to follow and the philosophy behind it makes sense to me. My seven year old has become a much more confident reader since we started. In fact, I like it so much that I am (successfully) teaching my five year old to read with the program. He is now able to read three sound words after just the first blending game!! I definitely recommend reading through the first three chapters and taking the test before starting, and I highly recommend using common sense. My five year old asks me often what the letters are when we are playing the blending game, so I tell him, but I avoid saying letter names when I'm trying to get him to read a word.

Just what I needed.

Reading Reflex - Helpful for an adult basic learner!

The book was exactly as represented by the supplier -- i.e.,new.

The content is perfectly suitable for my student's needs. Sounds to symbols is the FIRST thing needed for learning english for someone who has never had formal schooling in any language. While my student (from Ghana) can speak and understand most spoken english, he was never effectively exposed to it until he was 20 years old; he is now 45, wants to read and write english and the conventional approach hasn't work well. We are now seeing progress after only a few weeks!

Great, well researched, eye opening read!

I am a homeschooling mother of 5. I've encountered some of the problems that are mentioned in this book with my 7 year old and have seen some in other family members. I have adopted some of the terminology from this book when speaking to my children and it really seems to be helping. Although I haven't implemented the whole program as of yet, I have read through it and it is clear and well put together. The book describes the problems that may develop throughout a child's journey towards literacy. It describes how to avoid those problems and once encountered how to fix them. I would recommend this book to any parent or teacher who is concerned about literary success.

Excellent resource for parent wanting to teach their child to read!

I came across this book twice before actually buying it, at first thinking it was just another "Teach Your Child to Read..." book.
One thing I like about this book is that it incorporates phonemic awareness lessons to be done before actually beginning the reading process. This surprised me, because most parents don't think to do this kind of "work" with their child. I had already done some of the suggested activities with my little ones (when I bought the book I had four 2-4yos in my daycare - two were mine.)
We started the program with the oldest three who were at or near age 4. All three had fun "playing the letter games" as they called the lessons. All three began reading very quickly. Two went off to public school, while I homeschooled my daughter. She is now 5, has started her "official" kindergarten year, and is reading at a late 2nd grade level. I have now started teaching my youngest with this program. He is a bit tougher, and doesn't beg to play, but the method is working with him, and he is beginning to understanding the "sounding-out" process!
I have to give this program 5 stars because I have seen it work...not with just my own children, but with other children, too!
Blessings!
