EDITORIAL REVIEW

The author points out ways in which recognizing sound and letter patterns makes spelling easier. Also important are recognition of diphthongs, silent letters, compound and abbreviated words, contractions, homophones, homographs, prefixes, suffixes, and base words. “Brain tickler” problems challenge students’ imaginations and test their learning progress.

Barron’s popular Painless Series of study guides for middle school and high school students offer a lighthearted, often humorous approach to their subjects, transforming details that might once have seemed boring or difficult into a series of interesting and mentally challenging ideas. Most titles in the series feature many fun-to-solve “Brain Tickler” problems with answers at the end of each chapter.

This a good book for entry-level students. It contains some interesting information about the history of English language and great charts with common and unusual spellings. The numerous "Brain ticklers" exercises and drawings are a little overwhelming and maybe unnecessary.

There Is More to Spelling Than Meets The Eye!

To be quite honest, I couldn't imagine spelling has a lot to do with pronunciation before. The author clearly associates each letter pattern with each vowel sound.(e.g./u; o as in woman, ou as in could, oui as in bouillon, u as in bull, oo as in wood) It sounds like a real cliche, but practice makes perfect; you'll get used to it once you get the pattern indicated in this book! The same is also true of prefixes(pre-, post-, re-, dis-, ex-, etc.) and suffixes(-ed, -tion, -er, -or, -ee, etc.). Both will help you strengthen your vocabulary-building if you know what they mean.
Again, practice makes perfect!!

I bought this for several of my employees who have to write what customers say and who never learned the basics in school. They are enjoying learning and using this book, and their skills are improving. Well worth the small price.

This book is a very good supplement to any grade school course. It is also an excellent aide for adults who have problems with their spelling.

Not what was expected at all. Not a new approach to this subject, was very boring---much remenber this and remenber that stuff--did not like this book--intend to give it to goodwill.
