EDITORIAL REVIEW

A few years ago, a magazine sponsored a contest for the comment most likely to end a conversation. The winning entry? "I teach English grammar." Just throw that line out at a party; everyone around you will clam up or start saying "whom."

Why does grammar make everyone so nervous? Probably because English teachers, for decades – no, for centuries – have been making a big deal out of grammar in classrooms, diagramming sentences and drilling the parts of speech, clauses, and verbals into students until they beg for mercy. Happily, you don't have to learn all those technical terms of English grammar – and you certainly don't have to diagram sentences – in order to speak and write correct English.

So rest assured – English Grammar For Dummies will probably never make your English teacher's top-ten list of must-read books, because you won't have to diagram a single sentence. What you will discover are fun and easy strategies that can help you when you're faced with such grammatical dilemmas as the choice between "I" and "me," "had gone" and "went," and "who" and "whom." With English Grammar For Dummies, you won't have to memorize a long list of meaningless rules (well, maybe a couple in the punctuation chapter!), because when you understand the reason for a particular word choice, you'll pick the correct word automatically.

English Grammar For Dummies covers many other topics as well, such as the following:
  • Verbs, adjectives, and adverbs – oh my!
  • Preposition propositions and pronoun pronouncements
  • Punctuation: The lowdown on periods, commas, colons, and all those other squiggly marks
  • Possession: It's nine-tenths of grammatical law
  • Avoiding those double negative vibes
  • How to spice up really boring sentences (like this one)
  • Top Ten lists on improving your proofreading skills and ways to learn better grammar

Just think how improving your speaking and writing skills will help you in everyday situations, such as writing a paper for school, giving a presentation to your company's big wigs, or communicating effectively with your family. You will not only gain the confidence in knowing you're speaking or writing well, but you'll also make a good impression on those around you!

This book is a great book if you want to refresh your grammar skills for almost any standardized test. This book is precise, concise, and to to the point. It has easy-to-understand definition of all parts of speech. You'll find this book to be very helpful reference for brushing up your language skiils. Of course, this is not the most comprehensive grammar book, but it's good enough if you are preparing for the GMAT or the GRE.

Thanks to this book i am one step closer to getting a job i really want. But besides that it's a very good study tool, and easy to understand. I will definately hold on to this book for any future references to refresh my memory.

I only took one grammar class throughout my compulsory education years and it was in junior high school. Actually, I didn't have a choice, but I loved it. I really learned somehting and out of 32 students only 2 of us passed, me and another guy!

Anyway, I like to read and am a good writer, but I wanted to revisit this topic, so I ordered this book. The author does a wonderful job. It's witty and funny while simultaneously clear and concise. A good buy!

Terrific book for people out of practice

Earlier this year I decided to take a class to refresh my grammar skills (which are very bad). The required book for the class was terrible so I bought "English Grammar for DUMMIES" and, wow, what a breath of fresh air. This book is well written and the Author provides numerous examples--more so than other books usually do. Its like she actually seemed to care that the reader got the point. I highly recommend this book if you are trying to brush up on your writing skills.

waste of words and time

Chapter 1,
First paragraph:
"You my be reading this book for any of a number of reasons. Perhaps you're in the cafeteria, hoping to impress a nearby English teacher -the one who recently told you that handling in the fifteen essays you're missing will raise your grade all the way to F-. Or may be you are reading this book in the bus, hoping that a scholarly pursuit will convince the love of your life, who is sitting across from you, that you are a serious person and a completely date-worthy (Hey, it can happen.) Or you may by reading this book in the office lounge assuming that your boss will glance over and decide you want to improve yourself and therefore deserve a promotion."

The third, fourth and fifth paragraphs are about the same length and STYLE of the first paragraph.

I did not read the book, I just want to warn the prospective buyers about what I found in the first pages. I bought the Spanish translation of this book, and after reading the first pages I came to Amazon to see the original version. As we can see, the first paragraph does not have a single bit of information; the third, fourth and fith paragraphs are of the same style (you can verify that), and is reasonable to think that the whole book is full of these useless and time wasting paragraphs.
