EDITORIAL REVIEW

At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust.

This book met all my expectations. I was looking for a cookook with the nutrional informaion for my diabetic daughter. It has recipes that are simple and I would us on an everyday basis. I just wish there was a section for Celiac (gluten free) recipes with the nutritional info.

Betty Crocker's Diabetes cookbook

We got this cookbook for I have diabetes and needed to fix meals that was easy and good. We have tried three of the recipes and have been really easy and good. Not like the orther cookbooks that say the meal is good and easy to fix when you can't find half of the ingredents and when you sit down to eat them they are horrible.
I give this cookbook high ratings for the ingredents are easy to find and it tells you exactly how many carbs you are eating and what to fix along it to make a good meal in other wards the whole menu for that meal or all the meals for the day if you want a more down to the point on what to eat and when.

Thank you Betty!

I was very recently diagnosed with Diabetes type 2. A lot of the information I received on diabetes was very overwhelming. Trying to get a grasp on what diabetes is all about, the tests, the diet, and not to mention the calorie, carb counting, I needed something to be straightforward. Betty came through once again. The cookbook is awesome in that it applies the diabetic information that is essential with some of the best recipes I have seen. Betty Crocker, you rock!

GREAT COOKBOOK!!!!

WE JUST FOUND OUT A FEW WEEKS AGO THAT MY SWEET HUBBY HAS DIABETIES. SO I CAME HERE TO FIND A COOKBOOK TO HELP ME FEED HIM GOOD NUTRICIOUS MEALS. WHEN I RECIEVED IT I WAS SUPRISED TO FIND INFORMATION ABOUT DIABETES AND IT HELPED ME AND HIM TO BETTER UNDERSTAND HIS CONDITION. AS HIS DR. TOLD HIM, "YOU CAN EAT MOST ANYTHING, JUST WATCH YOUR CARBS AND SERVING SIZES, AND BE SURE TO WEIGHT AND MEASURE YOUR FOODS." SO, HE HAS SO MANY CARBS AND CALORIES A DAY AND I TRY TO FIND THE BEST WAY TO "SPEND THEM" ON THE BEST FOODS. HE IS DOING GREAT ON THIS AND IT HELPS ME ALSO BY PUTTING THE NUMBER OF CARBS IN THE TOP CORNER OF EACH RECIPIE. YEAH!! NO HAVING TO FIGURE THAT OUT.
THERE ARE SOOO MANY GOOD RECIPIES IN HERE TOO. WE DO NOT USE SUGAR, WE USE SPLENDA IN EVERYTHING AND IT TASTES GREAT!! THIS COOKBOOK WAS AN ANSWER TO A PRAYER....I LOVE IT!!!! IT IS JUST AS THE COVER SAYS "EASY AS 1-2-3!!!"

A Good Place to Start

I've read the mixed reviews on this product, and I feel like both are merited. If you're new to cooking on a diabetic diet (or just a healthier diet), then this is a very good place to start. Recipes are simple and use everyday food items, and the nutrition content is included for every meal. If you're more experienced, though, the recipes are more "food for thought" to provide ideas. There's PLENTY of room to make them more nutritious--for example, one especially tasty-looking entry calls for a highly refined rice ingredient that provides very little nutritional value. Instead of using it as written, try substituting brown rice and adding your own seasonings (I use a brown and wild rice mixture and add thyme, shallots, etc.). The nice thing about this cookbook is that there's plenty of flexibility to make a recipe "yours" by modifying ingredients to your own taste and nutritional preferences.
