EDITORIAL REVIEW

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half-Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

Student Review from Ms. Gehrke's Class
~ Written on Nov 23, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

This book is full of gods, half- bloods and monsters, I do not wish to mention as they are very, very horrible. This may sound like a history book but it is definitely not. Percy (whose full name is Perseus Jackson) is a half-blood and son of one of the most powerful gods in history. He finds out when he's in water, water heals him even if he has been bit by the most poisonous things. He makes to very close friends named Annebeth and Grover along the way, when he goes to the place he shall live Camp Half Blood.

This is one of my favorite books I've ever read because it is full of adventure. For example, when Zeus's master lightning bolt was stolen, they met Ares and fought him. I hope you like this book as much as I do!

I LOVE THEM

Engaging Uptempo Hero Story That's Full of Accurate Mythology
~ Written on Nov 18, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

After months of procrastinating, I read this book based on a family recommendation.

When it comes to YA/MG fantasy, I'm torn between reading books that provide lots of depth and books that move at a brisk pace.

The latter type often makes for a more entertaining read, while the former is more compelling.

I found The Lightning Thief to be a relatively light read (perfect for middle grade and late elementary readers) that's full of activity, an interesting narrative voice and interesting interpretations and inclusions of various mythological figures.

I'm a sucker for mythology and I think lot's of kids out there are as well. It's got so many great stories and was begging for a modern adaption such as the one Riordan provides.

Though following the path of the classic 'hero's journey', the voice Riordan taps into (in the form of Percy Jackson) is quirky, fun and contemporary...and solidly American (a nice counterbalance to the Potter franchise). I may not have felt bonded with the hero, but I certainly was interested in hearing his tale.

Overall, a great middle-step book for young fantasy readers and not a bad diversion for older fantasy fans as well.

The Lightning Theif
~ Written on Nov 17, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

A very interesting premise gives rise to an epic adventure not unlike "The Iliad." The action scenes are very detailed and methodical, however, they can be seen coming a mile away, and it takes too much from previous writings of Greek Heroes. The book does take the reader to a different world that transpires the reader's imagination. This book should be recommended reading to all teenagers for its educational value in knowledge of Greek gods and myths.

THE LIGHTNING THEIF BY EDWARD

Percy Jackson has been expelled from a lot of schools. Soon he finds out he's son of the Greek water god Poseidon. It's had a lot of action comedy and mythical creatures it is a good adventure book for people who like these types of books. Recommend this book and series to every one.
