The Sex Deck

Lots of fun cards to try, but some are almost exactly the same. Great for leaving a card lying around as a hint at plans for later. Great for first-timers.

good cards; toss the intro

The text: (1 Star)
"Add some spice" is the newest addition to my list of Three Word Sentences I Hate, right up there with "No pun intended" and "Give me names."

Besides reducing experimentation to something one would do only when sex has become "the same-old-same-old," it turns it into a homework assignment:

Read this chapter on kink.
Complete the exercises at the end.
Progress to the next chapter.
If you really try, you can move from Uptight Prude to Treading Water or from Treading Water to Freak.

What should be a pleasure becomes a long to-do list, which is why I prefer the conceptualization of sexuality as a personal map: better to wander curiously around your own landscapes than methodically check off experiences and positions like a hassled tourist.

The text insert in the Sex Deck instructs you to "...have a go at the more adventurous positions that may well qualify you for the sexual Olympics." It was this spirit of up-the-ante that was the source of my mixed feelings regarding The Big Bang A Guide to the New Sexual Universe, the sex book by [...]. In that book, the information is organized under the headings "Basics" and "Advanced." On the one hand, it was nice to see anal sex listed under the basics because I assume that means American taboos regarding anal play are fading. But I also imagined someone cursing the fact that he or she has spent so much time steeling their resolve to try being anally penetrated that now they're too late to get any `points' for it. Now to qualify as adventurous they'll have to try vaginal/anal fisting. Or I imagine another person checking the Advanced section to see where they stand, dismissing it as vanilla and passe, and patting themselves on the back for staying ahead of print.

Sex is not a test. Just play.

The cards: (4 Stars)
There are 52 cards; the back of each has a color-coded tab to identify it as belonging to one of four categories: sitting & standing, man on top, woman on top, and from behind. Additional information on the back includes instructions, what's good about the position for men, what's good about the position for women, variations, cautions, and how much effort/physical aptitude a position requires on a scale of 1 to 5.

On the front side of each card is an illustration of the position. The facial expressions are often neutral -almost like the emergency landing instructions on commercial aircraft- but the body language is sometimes passionate.

Not bad, good to get some fun started

My wife and I have had great fun with these cards. And while no, there isn't anything really wild in here, to us that wasn't the source of our fun. We use the cards as "kindling" to get the fire started. A card slipped into her purse in the morning, or left hidden where she might find later does more to get things going then the actual content of the cards. Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge or suggestion to get our own creativity going.

Overall, I would rate them as fairly high quality with a fair number of positions. Some of the positions are exceptionally basic such as missionary, others are duplicates with a minor twist while others yet are a little more creative. If you're looking for extensive sexual instruction and advanced technique, these probably aren't for you. If you're looking for a little something to spark some creativity and get things going, they can be quite fun.

Turning Over a New Card is Fun

Has variety and good ideas for change. Use as a magic deck and shuffle and pick a card any card and enjoy.

An Average Deck of Cards
~ Written on Aug 4, 2009. out of 2 users found this review helpful.

Just a few drawings. This might be nice for people who are new to it all. But for those who have been indulging and just looking for ways to spice it up, ehhh... not so much. Many of the positions are just slight variations of "standard" positions such as missionary and doggy style.

Seriously, this deck can only claim the "spicy" adjective if it's selling to a 16 year old virgin. If you've only ever had sex in the missionary position, OK, this deck is for you. But otherwise, the mild sauce at Taco Bell has more spice than this deck. Save your money and buy a pair of glow in the dark dice. I believe, you'll have WAY more fun and creative in an original way.
