EDITORIAL REVIEW

Full of mischief, valor, ribaldry, and romance, The Arabian Nights has enthralled readers for centuries. These are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: A thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever.

This volume reproduces the 1932 Modern Library edition, for which Bennett A. Cerf chose the most famous and representative stories from Sir Richard F. Burton's multivolume translation, and includes Burton's extensive and acclaimed explanatory notes. These tales, including Alaeddin; or, the Wonderful Lamp, Sinbad the Seaman and Sinbad the Landsman, and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, have entered into the popular imagination, demonstrating that Shahrazad's spell remains unbroken.

The World of the Arabian Nights
~ Written on May 18, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

The book Arabian Knights tells many different stories like The Story of King Shahryar and His Brother. King Shahryar wants to go visit his brother, but his brother Shah Zaman comes to see him instead do to the loss of his wife.
That's just one of the 16 different stories in this book. There are a lot and I intend to read them all.
When I first started reading this book I thought I wouldn't like and just chose it for fun, but it's actually very interesting. Anyone that likes magic will like this book. My favorite story is the story The Tail of the Merchant and the Jinee. It's about a rich merchant who ally kills the son of a jinee, and now he is sentenced to unless his three new friends (Sheikhs) can save him.

Bad sort
~ Written on Feb 22, 2009. out of 2 users found this review helpful.

I have over 600 books on my Kindle, so accuracy is important when I sort by author. This book does not sort correctly. When I sort by author, this comes up under "R" instead of "B" with my other Burton titles.

The Arabian Nights

The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night (1001 ARABIAN NIGHTS) also called The Arabian Nights. Translated by Richard F. Burton. All 16 volumes. Published by MobileReference (mobi)

This translation is an absolute joy to read. The language is vivid and alive and certainly successful in conveying the nuances of the original text. Excellent Kindle edition!
