EDITORIAL REVIEW

The days of stressing the acquisition of reading skills in isolation are in the past. To develop lifelong readers, it is vital for teachers to also show students how to apply these reading skills strategically to acquire meaning from text. This book is a comprehensive resource you can use to better equip yourself in the craft of teaching reading. Author Valerie Ellery first lays the groundwork for a comprehensive literacy classroom, detailing appropriate curriculum, assessment, and instruction. She then focuses on the five essential components of reading instruction identified in the 2000 National Reading Panel report—phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—to align instruction with current standards. You will learn how to implement the components into your instruction with techniques that foster active, strategic reading. Each technique identifies corresponding multiple intelligences and developmental levels of reading so you can determine which approach is best suited for each student’s specific learning style and reading need. Because scaffolding and teacher talk are essential to successful instruction, procedures for modeling the techniques and examples of teacher talk are provided throughout the book. Ultimately, you will learn how to gradually release responsibility for learning to students and guide them in becoming strategic, independent readers.

Literature activites

This product has been useful for classroom lessons. I have used the activities in there to help struggling readers and the activities make it an enjoyable learning experience. The activities can also be student lead. There are many different levels to use with all grades. Some focuses are phonic development and phonological awareness, and it uses a language approach.

Creating Strategic Readers is a valuable resource for elementary teachers. It is an excellent mix of theory, research, and practicality! Each of the 5 components of reading, as identified by the National Reading Panel in 2000, is addressed. You will want to have your own copy!

This book takes all the "stuff" we keep hearing about 90min blocks, guided reding, CAI, Shared reasding, etc. and puts is all together in a simple way that makes sense! Ideas you can take and use right away in your classroom and see results. A must for all primary reading teachers!

Great teacher resource

I recommend this book for primary teachers and reading specialists. It can spice up a current curriculum or help those just starting out. It has great blackline masters and ideas for spicing up your current curriculum. It works with Fountas & Pinnell, Reading First and any basal. Anyone can use it and benefit from it. I have taught 1st grade for 6 years and I think the book is great! It is not too wordy and has a lot of great ideas to keep my curriculum up to date.
