I recently interviewed with a school that is implementing whole-school, small-group reading instruction. As a teacher who has taught in schools that promoted whole-group reading intsruction, I purchased this book in hope that it would provide information to help me in the classroom. The information in this book is invaluable. The information suggested, is not only precise, but it provides specifics about assessing student reading levels, characteristics of each level, activities to support instruction, as well as, classroom routines that can facilitate small-group reading instruction; which can be a daunting task for new and veteran teachers. There are activities that focus on building fluency, word study and comprehension, which are three integral components to a successful reading program. As this book is focused on intermediate grade levels it provides information for both self-contained and departmentalized classroom settings. The authors have also included assessment material and reproducibles with detailed instruction for usage.
I read this book in about a week, however, I have sectioned it off and written notes that will prove to be extremely helpful in the classroom. This book is precise and detailed. It is a "must have" for those teachers and administrators who are currently utilizing small-group reading instruction.
I recently purchased the version of this book that caters to beginning and struggling readers. I am anxious to read it, as I am positive it will provide even more insight in the area of differentiated small-group reading.
For the price, this book is, an absolute, "must-have". I highly recommend it for classroom teachers at the elementary and intermediate levels. This book can also serve as a valuable resource for home-schoolers, as well.
