EDITORIAL REVIEW

This classic and indispensable reference for shade gardening is now back in print. Long considered required reading for those with difficult low-light areas, it covers the basics literally from the ground up, leading the gardener through the creation of his or her own shady retreat. Part One concerns the art and science of a shade garden, from preparing the soil, to pruning, to considering different "shades of shade" (does your favorite bed lie in dappled shade or high shade?). Part Two, which details information on growing the plant, is neatly arranged in sections according to the type of plant. These descriptions are casual, to the point, and often humorous. The sago palm, for example, "will put you in touch with paleobotany." Selected photographs and line drawings both illustrate and inspire.

Good book for starting to decide what kind of plants/garden to design

Got book for wife to decide what kind of layout and plants to have in our yard. We have about 2 acres in a heavily wooded area. Most places have less then 4 hours of sunlight, some places have no direct sunlight at all. This helps us to better use these wooded areas. Wife liked it a lot.

Worth every penny!

Chapter 8, "Shades of Shade" is, by itself, worh buying the book. Never realized just how varied "shade" could be!

Not Entirely Satisfying

There was some good advice in this book and some original descriptions which was nice. The author certainly has an intimate knowledge of many of the shade plants he describes. However, it does seem a little dated and the pictures are uninspiring. If the pictures were in color, and the information edited for current practices, it would have been much more satisfying.

This book was great because they have pictures that show as well describe the plants and tree's. My wife has low vision and this book was great for her. We recommend this book to all people who want to know what grows in the shade.
