USER REVIEWS

Great book!
~ Written on Jul 10, 2008. out of users found this review helpful.

My neighbor recommended this book as a tool for summer reading and learning.
My daughter loves the book and I like showing her the application it has in words we use every day. She does not mind doing a page or two every day. I find that bit to be an amazing feat. Why they do not teach this in schools is beyond me. Its very practical and what my kids learn they can build on.
I would recommend this for everyone in grades 1-12.
All-in-all a great book to learn from.

Wish I had this

I homeschool and this is working great for my 3rd grader. I've stuck mostly with a 1 word/day schedule. The flash cards are so good, you almost don't need the manuel. Oh if only my motherly hadn't been lazy and did this for me!

15 years later & it's STILL working!!

We were homeschooling before it was 'vogue' and one of my first purchases was _English from the Roots Up_. Since I was so new & unsure of myself, I figured some sort of instruction of the basic language structures would be the way to go.....I wasn't disappointed! In the simplest of forms, a word or portion of a word is introduced, defined, and it's origin explained. The red or green border (or as my kids say 'red for roman, green for greek') causes a visual trigger that makes it easily remembered!

We've had two graduate with 'good - to - very good' SAT scores and both said they got through the grammar / language style questions with the knowledge they had solely gleaned from this book.

NOW - they've got the flashcards!! I must admit though - when I see the cards the eldest two made with their crude red or green outline, I kind of wish they hadn't come out with the cards!!

Anyway - a definite plus to a Classical homeschooler and I would highly recommend its purchase!

Buy the flash cards, not the book

I purchased both the book and the flash cards. After reviewing both I kept the flash cards and returned the book.

The flash cards have everything you need, and they are ready to use. The flash cards include all forms of the greek or latin word on the front, and on the back they list many common English words based on the root.

The book requires that you make flash cards. The book also includes a few pages of background material, but not enough to make it worth the money. While the book has a lot of useful material, it is not as easy to use as the flash cards. The book would have just sat on the shelf -- the flash cards were put to use the day they arrived.

The flash cards are great and they are really the most helpful. Purchase the flash cards.

One a day for good vocabulary

At the end of each of our homeschool opening times we would learn one word. I used this with my tenth, sixth, and third grader. I used no cards but would simply "flash" the word at them with my hand covering the answer. After we discussed each new word we'd go back to previous ones to review, everyone shouting out the answer if they knew it. Sometimes I'd let them be the teacher and I'd "play" along. My tenth grader claims she learned more valuable information from doing this for about seven minutes per day than she did from her Latin course. Ouch! Then there was the constant reinforcement almost daily as we would encounter these words in other subjects and life.
