EDITORIAL REVIEW

The Fourth Edition of this highly successful text moves readers beyond often-mistaken common-sense understandings of crime by providing a rich introduction to how major scholars analyze crime. Criminological Theory: Context and Consequences, Fourth Edition shows the real-world relevance of theory by illuminating how ideas about crime play a prominent role in shaping crime-control policies and compelling students to apply theories to the contemporary milieu.

The text book is typical of its type and gives short chapters on each subject.

Good Insight of theories, bad context
~ Written on Dec 30, 2008. out of 1 users found this review helpful.

To the reviewer who stated ," the slanted views of the writers in favor of conflict theories is too obvious" You are correct. Whenever they put the theory into "context" of the times, it's a joke. Totall biased, and sometimes misleading political commentary to individuals not in the political field.
I had Dr. Lilly as a professor. The pompus jerk makes trite political accusations that would make any Political Science professor laugh. I wouldn't be able to get away with his analysis of the Reagan era in the book in any of my PS classes.

social context
~ Written on Jun 26, 2000. 1 out of 1 users found this review helpful.

The previous reviewer missed the point. Criminological theory should be studied with an appreciation of the social context (i.e., history) in which the theories were developed and extended.

THIS BOOK IS A HARD READ, BUT HAS SOME GOOD INFO
~ Written on Jun 21, 1999. 5 out of 7 users found this review helpful.

This book is a hard read. It is chockfull of historical research into the contexts of how different theorists came up with criminological theories. It covers control, conflict, and other theories, with an interesting section on feminine crime... This book is very convolluted and hard to follow at times, jumping back and forth between history and theorists...it needs to be made more clear and concise, and to make up whether it wants to be a book of theory or history. Also, the slanted views of the writers in favor of conflict theories is too obvious. Also, it should be used more for graduate study than undergraduate. If you have the time to decipher it, it has some interesting information in it. It is a small book, and perhaps this is why some of the theories were glazed over with little explanation or practical reviews. It is a decent book, but it should be made more accessible to the non-expert mind.
