ABOUT THIS BOOK

USER REVIEWS

Fantastic Book
~ Written on Apr 21, 2008. out of users found this review helpful.

I chose this book from several options for a class. Tovani has insight into what stands in the way of students' reading comprehension and useful strategies for how to prevent "fake reading". Best of all, though, Tovani uses examples as 'models' for how to put her strategies into action in a classroom and what response to expect when you do.

A MUST READ
~ Written on Feb 28, 2008. out of users found this review helpful.

As an English Teacher and Instructional Coach in an inner city school, I think it is about time someone has given us a hands on, tried and true approach to teaching reading. I think that every teacher in the country should be required to read this book. You do not have to buy into every strategy Ms. Tovani presents. The whole point is that you try them out, find out what works, and use them as needed. In our district, our Instructional Coaches just completed a book study of this book. We are moving next to DO I REALLY HAVE TO TEACH READING, also by Ms. Tovani. I think we would all gain something from these books, and more importantly, our students would gain too.

Suggested reading for parents helping children with reading

Many good points made in this text but don't expect a book to cure your problem...this offers lots of useful tips but I had to eventually rely on a local learning center to help with my son's case....

More educational fads

When will education get over the fads and get down to teaching. This is must more blah, blah, blah.

Teaching Best Practice for All Students
~ Written on Jun 9, 2007. 2 out of 2 users found this review helpful.

I have seen Cris use the same teaching best practices for her college prep classes and classes with struggling readers. Their academic acheivement from these supportive structures greatly improves and the kids read! From her book and visiting her classrooms, I saw her approach best practice for struggling students as best practices for all students and it works! The text is written in a way that us non-english teachers can pick it up and easily incorporate comprehension strategies into our classrooms too. I highly recommend any Tovani text.
