same book, updated cover

I just reviewed the "look inside" place of German: How to speak and Write It. The front cover is updated, yet the material inside is the same as when it was first published. I would recommend this book as a supplement to the Rosettastone German course and to a regular college course in German. Even though the pictures are out of date, it still is a good refresher course in German. One example of this book being out of date is no referrences to the computer or modern cell phone.

great setup but a bit old-fashioned

As a German tutor and native speaker, I really appreciate the way this book is set up and systematically builds one lesson on the next. In the exercises, it reviews information learned in the last few chapters.
In my opinion, the only little draw back (and the reason that I did not give 5 stars) is that it would need some updating as far as some of the pictures and words are concerned. It is quite uncommon in modern German to use terms like "der Knabe" or "das Fräulein Lessing".

Other than that, I am completely happy with this purchase and would definitely recommend it to any beginning learner.

Awesome and a great book for beginning

I purchased this recently as i just got a whim to learn the german language...basically as a "hobby". My family roots come from there and i just wanted to get familiar with this language. I know that they say it is one of the hardest to learn but i have plenty of time and in no hurry. It explains it well and how to say it with nice exercises at the end of each lesson. I am not all the way thru but i would suggest this book as a good starting foundation for teaching yourself. The only knock i would have against this book is that it doesnt come with an accompanying CD ;) highly recommend.

One of the best grammar books ever

This book is the ultimate for the beginner and the advanced learner. It is fast, easy to use, and best of all it is extremely helpful. This book is the gentleman's guide to proper German grammar. This book teaches all there is to know about German grammar including how to decide the gender of a noun ( a question which many people learning German struggle with ). I would recommend this book as the best grammar book yet.

Excellent comprehensive German grammar book

This is a very high quality foreign language textbook. "They don't make them like used to" and this is how they used to make them: high quality, excellent text, nearly devoid of typographical errors, numerous highly detailed hand-drawn sketches, easy to learn from if one is willing to do the work on a regular basis. The original text was written in 1948, so some of the vocabulary is a little out of date, but that is a very minor point, since a foreign language book is primarily about grammar. Current German vocabulary can be obtained from other sources after one has learned to speak the language. I have now worked a little more than halfway through the book and I am not the least bit disappointed.
