Flashback to age 13....

What are these people grousing about? This is WONDERFUL!!! It has no bells & whistles, it's from the 60's, for crying loud out.... : )
Love the full screen display, it's all I can use anyway. Peter McEnery was no buff hunk, but he was/is very pretty indeed (sigh).
Great movie for us oldtimers! And open minded youngtimers.

What a great movie and just as I remembered it as a kid. The DVD is great and you would never know it's a 60's movie by the quality of it. I highly recommend this movie if you are a Hayley Mills fan.

If you've read the book you're better off staying away from this

Well, at least the scenery is gorgeous, but that's pretty much it. This Disney film is based on Mary's Stewart's novel of the same name, about Nicola (Nicky) Ferris and her Aunt on a vacation to the island of Crete. She soon stumbles into a mystery involving Mark Camford (I think that was the last name although it's a different one than he had in the book), the over-the-top-over-acted baddie Stratos and some missing jewels. There are enough recaps here I'm not going to bother with rehashing it again, nor am I going to diss the DVD quality. My problem is once again Hollywood has taken a great book with an awesome story and screwed it up. If you think they trashed The Man In The Iron Mask, well you 'ain't' seen nothing yet.

In Stewart's book Nicola is a twenty something, independent, intelligent self-sufficient young woman, not the sniveling, irritating teenager portrayed by Hayley Mills. In the book she arrives a day earlier than her aunt and finds an injured Mark, his teenage brother and another friend in the mountains. There was no overcrowded bus, no wedding party, Sophia didn't own the hotel, she didn't have a son, there was no carnival, no yacht, no leopard, no man from the British embassy with a drunken wife, someone other than Mark's brother got tied up in the windmill, someone other than Nicola dodged the boat at the end in Dolphin Bay although worst of all we didn't get the spark and chemistry between Mark and Nicola that Stewart gave us. I was sooooo looking forward to that scene at the end of the book where she's realizing her attraction for Mark is going from Stage one to Stage five, but no, we don't even get that.

I could go on and on but you get the picture. It's probably a nice film for Hayley's fans or young kids in general but fans of the book should skip it. Wish I had.

I loved this movie

i saw this movie when i was 13 and loved it. I was so excited when i saw their was also a book by the same name as mary stewart. as i started the book, i was confused as it wasn't quite the same story. however, this book became my instant favorite book. i have probably read it over 40 times. i am now in my forties and i must say i still love this movie. one would have to expect that disney would change the plot somewhat. the book isn't exactly disney material - although i think it would make an awesome movie just the way it is. sure the acting and plot is not what we expect from movies made now, but that's to be expected too. this movie made me want to travel to crete, and in all these years, i still have the desire to go..... maybe someday. anyway, for the times, this movie is great. i always wished their was more romance between the characters, but then again, it's disney. that being said, i have to say my girls laugh at me for loving this movie. they think it's pretty boring. i guess they have come to expect so much more from the movies made now. a simple plot and fun movies like we had in the 60's just don't hold their attention. i don't understand - some of the people that rated this movie 1 star state that their is inappropriate material for young kids and that hayley mills is drunk in the movie. this is not true! there is nothing, not the shooting scenes or anything that is not appropriate. kids see far more on movie trailers these days. i'm not saying that's good - but a reality. for those that couldn't get the plot... i don't get that at all... it's not that difficult to understand. i do wish disney would release dvd's of high quality. just because this movie probably only appeals to those that loved it as a kid doesn't mean that we don't deserve a high quality recording. otherwise, why bother to re-release it. i'm sorry i got rid of my vhs before i knew this. all in all. i love this film. sorry people, hayley had to grow up, and for those of you that think she is "pudgy" . why does she have to be stick skinny? must you demand that all your hollywood stars are flawless?

whoopi for full

I rented the film at netflix which is why I am getting it. before the other part of the revue I only buy films when I can in FULL SCREEN? why should I pay for a film that makes half my TV screen Black at top and bottom is beyond me! I was so sad when films like WALL E did not offer full screen. I seldom bother to watch it now.

This film shows that Haley Mills can play many parts and be top at it. It's been a few months, so all the details are hazy. I do recall I was happy watching the film. Bits of comedy, drama and mystery blended it well. Then then title slipped my mind and I did not re look till now.
If you enjoy good family movies, it worth adding. Having it in Full is an added bonus.
