Moving story of an unlikely friendship in post-war New York.
~ Written on Nov 9, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

The unlikely friendship between a young Irish Catholic boy and a Rabbi in 1950's New York City & the boy's coming of age, plays against the backdrop of predjudice and attitudes of the time. Pete Hamill skillfully builds up to a mystical ending. This is the 2nd Hamill novel I've read & highly recommend anything he's written.

disappointment

Although I enjoyed this story and the reading, the quality of the tape was disappointing. I understood that the tape case was cracked which I thought would simply be cosmetic, but several of the tapes kept flipping over to the second side and it was tedious to try to locate the right spot let alone to get the tape to stop flipping. I wouild actually like to return this purchase, but I'm not sure how to do this!!

Jewish Mysticism, the Kaballah, and Love
~ Written on Apr 22, 2009. out of users found this review helpful.

This is a delightful book. Though the writing is not of the highest caliber, I smiled repeatedly at the loveliness and hope that runs through this book. I remember thinking that we all need more delight in our lives, something that this book offers.

The tale is of a young Irish boy in 1940's post-was Brooklyn who befriends a Czech Rabbi. The boy learns yiddish and the Rabbi learns English. The reader learns about Jewish mysticism, the Kaballah, acceptance and love.

I enjoyed this book thoroughly.

Masterful storyteller

I picked up this book based on a friend's recommendation and found the storyline fascinating and the skillful craft of storytelling masterful. The finale was rather predictable, save for a few minor details, but the sense of wonderment was not diminished by the expected ending. Highly recommended as an endearing story and quick read.

Good story, weak quick ending..

MY FIRST HAMILL NOVEL. I ENJOYED THE BOOK, THE STORY WAS DOWN TO EARTH AND VERY REAL, BUT THE ENDNING LEFT ME WONDERING. IT WAS SO REAL, AND LIFE DOES INCLUDE MANY MIRACLES, BUT THIS ONE IS RIGHT OUT OF A COMIC BOOK. I SUGGESST THIS BOOK TO ANYONE WHO GREW UP IN NEW YORK CITY IN THE 40'S, IT HIT'S HOME. THE ONE THING THIS BOOK SHOWS ME IS THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO FIGHT BACK.
