During the course of the next few weeks we will be upgrading our site's hosting account to better cater for the large amount of visitor traffic we now enjoy. This will mean a better user experience for everyone, and will give us the space and server power to expand and provide even more useful content.
This process will involve the transfer of the entire site and it’s databases to a new computer. Whilst most of this is a fairly simple job and will be dealt with by our web hosts, there will be a period of time where we will have two versions of our site running in parallel. This will inevitably mean that our forum and other areas of the site that rely on our databases may experience a short period of downtime when we make the switch from the old to the new version.
We will also need to point our domain name to the new server, and users may well experience a brief period (one or two days) of downtime during this procedure.
As one might expect with changes of this magnitude, there is the potential for things to go wrong and unexpected situations to arise. We are hopeful that there will, however, be minimal disruption to our site and we fully intend to provide as full a service as possible during the changeover period.
Rest assured that I will keep you up to date of our progress by posting news here in the site Diary, and I will try to let you all know in advance if and when we expect services to be disrupted.
In the meantime, if you have any comments to make or notice any problems during the transfer, please post them in our Comments & Suggestions forum.
We are looking forward to being able to offer you a bigger, better and brighter UsingEnglish.com in the new year, and our fingers are crossed that all goes well.
Wish us luck! :-)
