Question Figure our vs. figure

Hi. I have found that sometimes people use "figure" in the meaning of "figure out" (though I may be wrong). Nevertheless, I think I see the difference between the two, but sometimes I think that one may use "figure" instead of "figure out", and, then, I don't see the sense of using the latter. For example, consider the following sentences:
1. "I figured out that this was a huge mistake."
2. "I figured that this was a huge mistake."
I heard both sentences used (and probably the latter even more often), and this caused my considerations, since both sentences have the meaning of "figure out", don't they? Dear teachers, are you able to help me out?

Thanks in advance,
Nyggus
