Default we'd better go now = we should better?

I've checked that the meaning in the contraction of the phrase "we'd better go now" is "we had better go now", but I cannot believe it, it sounds so strange, I'd rather believe the meaning is "we should better go now", can this be possible?.
Is it correct to say "I should better do something"?
I get confused because "had better" sounds like past, and after this should come a verb in past participle, like: I had better gone there.
Please help me.
Thanks
