Shall I need to add an ( s ) to animal ? Or can I say " Dogs are a faithful animal ? I personally think to add ( a ) would make the sentence better and there is no need for an s to animal in either case.
Dogs are a faithful breed (of animal). (OK)

Dogs are a faithful animal. (OK only if 'animal' means breed)

Dogs are faithful animals. (OK) plural+plural+plural

The plural linking verb 'are' makes both sides equal: X = Y

dogs (plural) = faithful animals (plural)

The singular linking verb 'is' makes both sides equal: X=Y

a dog (singular) = a faithful animal (singular)

:D
