In the novel, Wings of Honor by Tom Willard, the author portrays war that it is evil, scary, and a sad time for people. The novel is about an adult named Samuel Sharps that tries to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. His grandfather was a Sergeant Major of the Buffalo Soldiers, a cavalry in the army. He gets a chance when Pearl Harbor gets bombed and starts the 2nd World War.
The author portrays war that it’s evil because of all the killing of German soldiers. Samuel feels guilty about himself because he’s creating life by bringing birth to a baby by her wife, Shania. But, he ends many lives in the army. In a dogfight, Samuel manages to shot down a German plane and the pilot escapes, he had the perfect chance to kill the pilot, but hesitated as he thought he could kill, but not murder.
The author portrays war it’s a sad time because the German soldiers you kill also have a family, just like Samuel. His friend in the war, Kane, told Samuel he should
of said his last goodbyes to his family because he might never see his family again. Since Samuel is a colored man, all white men don’t like them, even if he’s serving his country. Samuel wanted to see a movie at a local theatre and a white man didn’t let him in line and Samuel protested that he was in the air force and the white man ignored him and Samuel started to get beat up by other white men because he was a colored man.
The author portrays war it’s scary because of the scary stuff happening. For example, Samuel becomes MIA (Missing in Action) and now he is alone on Germany territory with no comrades. Also, that he gets gunned down by a German plane, and its his first time he ever got shot down, he didn’t know what to do since he was scared.
The author portrays war like its evil, scary, and sad time for all people. Although, Samuel Sharps still has the courage and bravery to continue on his life in war.
Wings of Honor Part Two
In the novel, Wings of Honor by Tom Willard. Samuel Sharps went to college to be an air aviator for his country, The United States of America. Japan attacks Pearl Harbor resulting in the US declaring war against Japan and Germany. At first he felt defenseless, scared, and no self-confidence because he didn’t have time train since Pearl Harbor was bombed. Although, Samuel Sharps found his courage to volunteer himself to join in the battle. After battling in the war for more than a year now, he got a chance to see his family again. Samuel Sharps is ultimately changed emotionally and physically after the war.
Samuel Sharps gains pride and honor because he was serving for his country. He survived the war for a year and also survived MG42 (German Machine Gun) fire in the leg, which people most wouldn’t survive due to blood loss. Also, he felt pride in his fast recovery because he can could with the war again. The doctor requested a cane, but Samuel denied the request and said, “I’m getting stronger every day, Doctor. I don’t even need a cane to help me walk. I’ve been walking…..hell” Samuel gets stronger everyday no matter what condition he is in.
Through the war, Samuel Sharps gained more love for his family and from his family when he finally returned home. Everyone had missed him, Samuel was the same to everyone. Everyone had wet cheeks and teary eyes when Samuel finally came home. He gained more love for his family by keeping his grandfather’s sabre the whole time of his duty. Because his grandfather was like Samuel, a soldier in the army.
Adrian, Samuel’s father, was impressed, “You took mighty good care of this, son. I’m very proud of you.” Shania, Samuel’s wife, kissed and hugged Samuel tight and said, “You’re strong enough everywhere else.” Samuel is strong no matter in what condition, what place, and how far separated from the people he loves. War caused his family to think about him everyday and worry about him. Before the War, Samuel’s family didn’t pay attention to him and his parents were strict to him.
Through the war, Samuel Sharps gained freedom. Before the War, Samuel’s family didn’t pay attention to him and his parents were strict to him and had little freedom from his parents. He was able to go home after he was shot by MG42 (German Machine Gun) fire. He wanted to go see his family again. (After all the years he went through the war). (The thoughts of how he created life with Shania, Samuel’s wife, while he’s ending lives in the war). (All the dogfights he went through, and almost facing Death in the face). He is called Lituenant Samuel Sharps for all his hard work, bravery, and honor for his country. Samuel thought it was worth it. He had to pass an exam that would determine if he stayed in the army or not. He didn’t pass, so he becomes depressed, but happy at the same time because he can spend the rest of his life with his family.
Samuel Sharps gained freedom, pride, honor, and love. Samuel changed dramatically after the war. Before, he felt defenseless, scared, and no self confidence. After the war, he became honorable, proud, and self confidence. Samuel Sharps was affected emotionally and physically. |
