Heres my book report:
Wings of Honor Part One
In the novel, Wings of Honor by Tom Willard, the author portrays war as an evil, frightening and sad time for people. The novel is about an man named Samuel Sharps who tries to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. His grandfather was a Sergeant Major in the Buffalo Soldiers, a cavalry regiment in the US army. He gets his chance when Pearl Harbor is bombed and the US is drawn into the 2nd World War.
The author portrays war that is evil by describing the killing of German soldiers. Samuel feels conflict and guilt about himself because he’s creating life with the birth of a baby to his wife, Shania and ending many lives as a soldier in the army. In a dogfight, Samuel manages to shoot down a German plane but the pilot escapes, he had the perfect chance to kill the pilot, but hesitated as he thought he could kill, but not murder.
The author portrays war as a sad time because the German soldiers who died also had families, just like Samuel. His friend in the war, Kane, told Samuel he should have said his last goodbyes to his family as he might never see them again. Because Samuel is black he is disliked by the whites, even though he’s serving his country. Once, Samuel wanted to see a movie at a local theatre but a white man would not let him get in line to enter the theatre. When Samuel protested that he was in the air force the white man ignored him then other white men joined in and he was beaten up merely because he was black.
The author portrays war as frightening because of the terrifying things that can happen. For example, Samuel at one time was MIA (Missing in Action) and he was alone in German territory with no comrades. On another occasion, he was shot down by a German plane, something he had never experienced before He didn’t know what to do as he was so scared.
The author portrays war as evil, frightening and sad for all people. Despite this, Samuel Sharps still has the courage and bravery to continue and survive the war.
Wings of Honor Part Two
In the novel, Wings of Honor by Tom Willard. Samuel Sharps went to college to be an airforce pilot for his country, The United States of America. When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in the US declaring war against Japan and Germany he was left feeling defenseless, scared, and lacking self-confidence as he didn’t have sufficient training before Pearl Harbor was bombed. Despite this Samuel Sharps found the courage to volunteer himself for combat duty. After fighting in the war for over a year, he finally got a chance to see his family again. Samuel Sharps is ultimately changed emotionally and physically by the effects of his experiences during the war.
Samuel Sharps gained pride and honor because he was serving his country. He survived a year of war and recovered from an MG42 (German Machine Gun) bullet in the leg, which would have killed most people due to massive blood loss. Also, he felt pride in his fast recovery because he could continue to serve in the war again. The doctor suggested he use a cane, but Samuel refused and said, “I’m getting stronger every day, Doctor. I don’t need a cane to help me walk. I’ve been walking…..hell” Samuel gets stronger everyday despite the seriousness of his condition.
Through the war, Samuel Sharps developed a stronger love for his family and from his family when he finally returned home. Everyone had missed him, Samuel was loved by everyone. Everyone had wet cheeks and teary eyes when Samuel finally came home. He gained more respect from his family by keeping his grandfather’s sabre throughout his time of duty. His grandfather, like Samuel, was a soldier in the army.
Adrian, Samuel’s father, was impressed, “You took mighty good care of this, son. I’m very proud of you.” Shania, Samuel’s wife, kissed and hugged Samuel tight and said, “You’re strong in everything you do.” Samuel kept his strength no matter what the conditions, what place, and how far separated from the people he loved . War caused his family to think about him everyday and worry about him. Before the War, Samuel’s family didn’t pay attention to him and his parents were strict with him.
Through the war, Samuel Sharps gained freedom. Before the War, Samuel’s family didn’t pay attention to him and his parents were strict with him and he had little freedom. He was able to go home after he was shot by MG42 (German Machine Gun) fire. He wanted to go to see his family again. In the years he was in the war he had thoughts of how he created life with Shania, his wife, while he’s ending lives in the war. (All the dogfights he went through, and the times he looked death in the face). He is called Lieutenant Samuel Sharps now in recognition of his hard work, bravery, and honor for his country. Samuel thought it was worth it. He had to pass an exam that would determine if he stayed in the army or not. He didn’t pass, so he becomes depressed, but happy at the same time because he can spend the rest of his life with his family.
Samuel Sharps gained freedom, pride, honor, and love. Samuel changed dramatically after the war. Before, he felt defenseless, scared, and had no self confidence. After the war, he became honorable, proud, and self confident. Samuel Sharps was affected emotionally and physically by his experiences. |
