Default Dog Language

The dog is everywhere in Germany. I was once asked: what do you say in English when you give orders to a dog to sit? The German word is: Sitz "sit" Maybe this a German practice or the way to make dogs obey orders. Does sth like that exist in English? I haven't got a dog but I would appreciate some language used by people when speaking or giving orders to dogs.
