It could be a direct translation, for example from German or a Scandinavian language. It could easily have arrived in England via American. The phrase could have been accepted into the English language because it is shorter than 'thank you very much'. It is also often heard used by news broadcasters, because it is easier to use to finalise an interview and move on to another topic.
