Default Use of "the"

I have just started to wonder...
In the following example, are the cases #1 and #2 both acceptable and correct?
(Can I use either case?)
What is the difference between these #1 and #2 cases?

(Example)
1. The apples which are rotten do not taste good.
2. Apples which are rotten do not taste good.
