The Diary of Anne Frank is one of those books that people read and then realize that their problems probably aren't so bad, compared to Anne and her family having to leave everything behind and live in a secret hiding place for two years. Others are moved by Anne's optimism (via her diary entries) and faith in humanity, despite her desperate circumstances.
As an aside, there's a joke in the theater world regarding this play....if someone is describing a very bad actress, they might say "She was so bad that when she starred in
The Diary of Anne Frank and the Nazis came looking for her in that one scene, everyone in the audience yelled 'She's in the attic!'"
