You say you like anything - but I am not sure this is quite the case. Do you prefer your books to have lots of action, lots of talk, or lots of fact? Are you interested in reading mysteries? Science fiction? Or is your prime interest the quality and technique of writing?

For good story-telling: Somerset Maugham, Ernest Hemingway, Graham Greene, Ian Rankin, John Steinbeck, Stephen King, M.R. James.

For fine writing: Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, J.L. Carr.
