You must have been quite young when you left, and that is why you didn't retain your accent. (Peerhaps your accent reminded you of pleasant memories of that place, and that is why you wanted to hold onto it.)

Yes I agree. You're absolutely right! I've always been attracted by its accent. Sometimes when I think about my past, I really feel as if I had lost something.
However the problem is that I arrived in Italy when I was 5 and from then on I refused to speak English. When my parents tried to make me speak it I always answered
"We're in Italy and I'm not gonna speak English here!".
That's also why my English is not quite like a native speaker's. It could seem odd, but I
was a native-speaker even though I'm not any more.
