Default Re: [Tdol's Blog] Simplified Spelling

(I can't access the article.)

Why are people always harping on spelling? It's more than outdated idea, wouldn't you have to agree, especially given that history repeats itself. Take a look at Shakespearian English, Old English, Middle English--you need scholars to translate the words. So if someone ever gets the go-ahead to change modern English, you and I and everybody else who can read modern English will one day be scholars too--because somebody is going to have to teach people how to decipher what's already been written.

Moreover, what century are these spelling reformists living in? Certainly not this one, the one where technology leads the pack. From typesetting to typewriters to keyboards, which one day will indeed be supplanted by video. Typing is on its way out, and with it that savior of Microsoft's, the all powerful spellchecker.

Video is a silent mover. It's the future. The written word will be supplanted by the spoken word, maybe not in all things (signs, etc), but in most things. So, unless you're living in the past, why even bother worrying about spelling at this point?
