Just some comments:
'The cat sat on the mat.' is a sentence because it has a verb (sat). The subject is cat and the object is mat. A clause is similar to a sentence but it lacks a verb. In your example:
"The Duchess! The Duchess!" he (the White Rabbit) muttered, "Oh, my dear paws! Oh, my fur and whiskers! She's going to get me executed! Where could I have dropped those things?"
it is a quote, which includes two sentences as well as clauses.
