I agree with what many people on this thread have said. Learning a foreign language isn't a MUST, to have a good life, be happy. But it is something that vastly enhances ones life and brings a multitude of benefits.
Besides the skill and the professional/communicative opportunities a new language gives you, I'd cheerlead the fact that it changes who you are. If/when you learn a new language, you gain new insight into another culture (and language is the cornerstone of culture), it changes you and your view of the world. You wear a different "skin" and see the world with a different pair of glasses. Learning a new language besides being very necessary in today's world (even for us English speakers) , is a great and life altering experience. Number 3 behind having a child (1) and Loving (2).
