A 'pressure cooker' is a type of saucepan that is sealed so that the pressure builds up and it cooks faster. It's used to imply great pressure or strain being imposed on us.

If you pull the rug from under someone feet, you change the situation very rapidly, naking it difficult for people. The current situation is removing standards of security that we alll took for ganted a few years ago as the world changes.
