For example, a name like Cholmondeley-Sidebottom is actually pronounced "CHUM-ly siddy-bitOME".
The cult 1970s comedy show Monty Python's Flying Circus satirised this with a sketch involving a man whose name was spelled "Raymond Luxury-Yacht", but pronounced "Throatwobbler Mangrove".
Some names come from other languages, such as Irish Gaelic. Irish Gaelic has very different pronunciation rules, and so for example Eithne is pronounced "Enya". |
