Smile insist

hello everybody,
I'm here with my doubts again.
I'd like to know if the following sentence is correct : "when I was a child my mother insisted that I LEARNED the piano" . can I use the verb learn in the present, that is , can I say : when I was a child my mother insisted that I LEARN the piano....?"

What is the meaning of the expression PLANT FOOD ? ( i thought it meant a kind of vegetarian food).
Thank you very much
