Welcome to the forums.

There are different conventions for funerals. Some societies/communities prefer that the body is enclosed completely with the coffin lid down so that it cannot be seen; others will leave the coffin lid open until the coffin is removed to the burial ground or crematorium, so that the mourners can see the person. This is an "open casket funeral".

"Casket" is an American term for coffin.
