It doesn't have to come right at the beginning of the sentence, but the subject noun or noun phrase will come before the main verb:

John (subject) kicked his brother.
Yesterday, John kicked his brother. (same, but not directly at the beginning)
Cheese is nice. (subject noun = cheese)
