One of the definitions for "series" is as follows:

Quote:
A succession of usually continuously numbered issues or volumes of a publication, published with related authors or subjects and similar formats.
Examples
A series of articles
A series of papers
A series of books or--in publishing--a book series

Note the last example, "a book series", 'book' is singular because it functions as an adjective. Only nouns takes plural -s.
